Breaking Down Barriers

Ministering to Those with Intellectual Disabilities

and Mental Health Issues

WELCOME!

"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth."

—2 Timothy 2:15

Welcome to the Mary Marshall Ministry blog! This unique online ministry presence helps break down the barriers and dispel misconceptions about ministering to people with intellectual disabilities and mental health issues. We hope to establish a relationship and build a friendship with you. You will learn and understand that, like you, our Mary Marshall residents need spiritual sustenance to grow in Christ and expand His kingdom. We believe if you get to know us, really know us, you will want to be a part of this unique ministry or find ways to serve those in your community.

2024 Spiritual Colloquium

On January 9, I was honored to be a guest on the weekly Palms Up show hosted by Rhonda Hamilton to talk about the upcoming Volunteers of America Spiritual Colloquium to be held on March 9 at the Metropolitan Community Church of DC, 474 Ridge Street NW. For more information, visit https://www.voachesapeake.org/spiritual-colloquium-more.../.

Like many families, our Mary Marshall Ministry family comes together for Celebration of Life services, the occasional wedding, holidays, and other events. Although we may not see each other as often as we like, God is with us when we do. Today, we gathered to honor and celebrate three residents who are now with the Lord. It was a beautiful service, and I was happy to serve with my fellow VOA ministers and sisters in Christ, Divina Alston and Jules Christian.

Light Stroke

Jesus chose the most unlikely folks to be His disciples, such as fishermen Simon Peter, Andrew, James, and John; Matthew, a tax collector; the ever-doubting Thomas; Jewish zealots like Simon; Judas, a thief and traitor. Simply put, Jesus chose imperfect, everyday people of the time and tasked them with helping Him with His purpose, as Luke (4:43) records Christ in His own words: ”I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also because for this purpose I have been sent.” I never considered myself disciple material, yet I was called and answered. “Observations From An Unlikely Disciple” is a series of Scripture-based messages reflecting God’s love featured on Colonial Beach's radio station, WWER, and can be found on Podbean.  They are a continuation of this unlikely disciple’s ministry.
